Lately Ella has been waking up around 4 every two or three times a week. She usually goes back to sleep fairly quickly, after a drink or a diaper change. But years of being paged at all hours of the night (often with emergencies requiring me to be awake and alert) has made it hard for me to fall back asleep*. So this latest phase has not been my favorite. But what I am thankful for is what happens in the mornings. Ella has become very very good at playing by herself in her crib. She will play with her stuffed animals contentedly until I come and get her, giving me an extra hour or so to sleep. It has been great. Maybe she can teach her little sister.
*If anyone has any tips on how to fall back asleep quickly, please share. I'm trying to figure it out before February...

What works for me is not getting enough sleep ever, so that when I am awoken by a child, I can fall immediately asleep and sometimes in the morning I have no recollection of how I got into Lily's or Nate's bed. Try it :) I think come February it'll be easier for you to fall back to sleep ;)
I have had insomnia issues since I was a child. One of my best "tricks" is listening to the radio. On 105.7 it is "Coast to coast" and it is so mindless, I fall asleep fast.
D has been waking for at 4:00 for the past week. He's a tiny baby so of course I feed him as opposed to the "paci" run. But...man, it sucks. If you find something that works let me know.
Wall sits. Or when you are not pregnant, push-ups. Dad may be a bit crazy in a lot of things, but this one works for me.
Josh was in the army and used to wake up ready to attack! I had to talk him down and convince him to go back to sleep. He doesn't do it as much anymore, but I have lots of practice with "wide awake-go back to sleep".
