encourage me

I love watching the Amazing Race. Mostly because I like seeing where they travel, and then dreaming of visiting all those far off places. But also because you get characters. Like the happy hippies. Or the Mormon-hating "Christian" family. Or the couple from the sticks. Or the mother and her deaf son. The list goes on and on. This year there was one couple that pretty much had it all together, and they ended up winning. They were fairly upbeat; perhaps to a fault. During one daunting task, the girl looked at her partner and said, "Encourage me, Cheyne. Encourage me." The way she said it was pretty funny, and it came off a little pathetic. Ryan mocked her. But I kind of got it. Sometimes you know you need a little encouragement, and sometimes you've got to ask for it.

I need some encouragement.

Since I was 10 I have had bad posture. Slumped over, stooped over, bad posture. My parents tried to help me {I couldn't get my ears pierced until I improved}, I would try to focus on it, and while our efforts helped for a while I would always fall off the wagon.

When we were in Italy this fall I once again noticed how poor my posture was (funny how pictures standing next to your pitch perfect sister will do that). I'm heading toward hunchback. So I jumped back on the wagon. I went to a physical therapist, got some exercises, and have been making a sincere effort.

But now it's been 3 weeks, and the 40 minutes a day spent doing these stupid exercises is getting a little old. I am seeing a difference {one of my ribs actually poked out funny, and now it is going back in place} but I can tell that I am on the verge of letting it slide. And then I may end up a hunchback forever.

So....encourage me. Tell me how you've persevered and how worth it is. Or tell me that no one likes a hunchback. That if I don't take care of this now, you won't be my friend. {I really like having friends--that one might work}

Thanks. It worked for Megan and Cheyne.

What I like about this is that you aren't making excuses. Inspiring. My mom encouraged me to shower more over the holidays. How do you like that?

That means, doesn't scoliosis play a part here (if I remember right)?

Hmm, just looked that up. Not so sure anymore, but I was fondly recalling your sweet brace from sleepovers in middle school and my own dear headgear. All that as my back is giving me pain from constantly hunching over the keys on my keyboard. Obviously I gotta work on this, too.

Did you take a "before" picture? Maybe if you visually see the progress it'll help you stay motivated (if the rib going back in place isn't encouraging enough). You're a good example to your patients and Ella, keep it up!

Luckily, scoliosis isn't an issue. Just muscles that have tightened, weakened, and then set firmly in their hunched state.

Good idea, Thayer. My PT told me to do the same thing, but I never got around to it.

I am impressed. I have terrible posture too. And I keep thinking I will work on it but minutes later I forget. Keep it up. You will be so happy you did. And then maybe I will follow your lead. :)

You go girl! It is so hard to stick with something that is not fun! I really enjoyed seeing you at Kimmy's shower and I love looking at your blog. Ella is one of the cutest little girls I have ever seen.

Sometimes the defeat you feel after giving up is worse than the pain of having to stick with something.

Do it for Ella! She's adorable enough and she's cute enough and she's funny enough. But do it for yourself, too. It's a pain to have something that requires almost constant attention, but the end results are completely worth it.

Good for you...you can do it! I need you to teach me your exercises because I definitely have the same problem!

Great post! We loved Megan and Cheyne. My mom always told me and my sisters to "stand up straight" when we were little. Good luck, you can do it!

Ohh I can relate! I have always had awful posture! When I was younger my mom would tell me "stick your boobs out" which was just mortifying to my pubescent self...(I didn't want to think about my "changing body" let alone flaunt it) ha ha.

When I slink into bad posture I try to remember what teachers always say in ballet class: pretend there is a string going vertically through your body and you have to pull it up from atop your head so the rest of you will align straight. For some reason that visual helps me...

Good luck!!! :)

Ha ha, Jane, I remember telling you that!

Here is some motivation from an oldtimer mom baby Al....

"You are just too young and too beautiful to let yourself look like a hunched over old lady...."

"Once your muscles are strong and used to standing up straight, you won't even have to think about it anymore..."

Do those help?

I actually love you just the way you are Baby Al, but as a mom I am all for good posture and am always harping on my kids about it.

I know, I need encouragement OFTEN too!

Well here goes, YOU CAN DO IT! I will probably take hard work, determination, a good doses of fight and patience...all of which I know you have in bucketfulls! I can even do the exercises with you if you need!

In the end, if things don't work, know that I love you and will be your friend no matter what :)

That being said, haven't seen you and Ryan in a while. Want to meet up for dinner or a game?

hows this for encouragement? keep it up for a month and I'll treat you to a massage at Kimmy's favorite new spa. Or is that bribery?

Thanks, Mom. You know how to get to me!

Jane--I still look like a pre-pubescent girl, so the "stick your boobs out" idea's no good for me. But made me laugh!
