Wonderful Weekend

I had my first work-free weekend in ages, and I enjoyed every second of it. I slept in, cleaned my house, did my laundry, cooked in, ate out, saw a movie, worked out, took a nap...pure bliss. And, I think I felt the baby move. Either that or there are new bubbles in my stomach that are popping every now and then. I must be looking more pregnant too, because today in church the woman sitting next to me (who speaks very little English) offered me a cookie, "For the baby." I happily took it.

Blogs Away

I'll admit it. I love blogging. Well, I love reading other people's blogs, not necessarily posting on my own. When I started this blogging adventure (thank you Zak) it was almost like a joke...something to do at 3:54 am while on call (thank you Camie for validating early posts). But now I would consider myself a bona fide blogger. I love keeping up to date on the lives and loves of friends and family. But even more, I love finding a blog of someone I've lost contact with (the Smart girls for instance) and finding out what they are up to. It's like being a fly on the wall. I've been surprised at how many blogs are out there...everyone (except Jamie) is doing it.

I am almost done with a busy month at work, and then I'll be better about posting. Keep on a blogging!

It's true

After nearly 7 years, Ryan and I are finally moving forward. We are about 5 years behind most of our friends, but better late than never. The big day is September 6, and I am already looking (and feeling) pregnant. If any of you moms out there have any advice on sleeping, eating or dressing, give it to me. It will be about a month before we find out whether we need blue or pink paint for the nursery...we'll keep you posted.

Roots

Thanks to Mom and Natalie for the beautiful birthday flowers. I loved the cabbage! We knew you were good, Nat, but now we know just how good. Thanks a million.

You win some.

I am doing a two week stent in the ER, and yesterday I had one of the more satisfying patient encounters. A toddler came in after having a febrile seizure. By the time he got to the ER he was fine, and I began obtaining a past medical history from his mother. When I asked her if he was immunized she said no. When asked further, she said, "I don't believe in it. If I could get a doctor to tell me the truth, maybe I'd think about it." So at the end of the interview, I gave her my schpeal on immunizations, and left it at that.  An hour or so later, as I was giving her discharge instructions, she said, "Can you just give him some shots before we go?" I wasn't sure if we could even give immunizations in the ER, but there was no way I was going to let this opportunity pass. We shot him up, and he is a bit safer for it. One step closer to herd immunity for all!

Perks

On Sunday, after all of my complaining about the hospital, I was reminded of Primary Children's special place in my life. I was heading to church (which by itself is pretty neat--you can go to half hour church dressed in my scrubs!) when lo and behold, there was Elder Oaks sitting in the audience. He and his wife just showed up. He didn't speak, but did stay to shake hands and give warm smiles. It lifted my spirits and kept me going.

You, me and a little RSV

I'm back on wards, and you know what winter at a children's hospital means...lots of bronchiolitis. I swear, half the hospital (staff included) has a respiratory virus. I am just getting over my own version. It isn't all bad, though. At least the kids (every single one of them, so far) get better. I'll take RSV over a liver transplant any day. Two more weeks and I am done. Then I head to the ER with, what else, more RSV.

Castle Country, Here I Come

New Year, new adventures. This week I made the trek to Price for an outreach clinic with a handful of others from Primary Children's. I was told we would be flown down in Governor's Jet. Turns out, our very nice pilots flew a teeny-tiny Fish and Game plane. Because the flight was only 45 minutes, I didn't take any Dramamine. Big mistake. I did not lose my breakfast, but it was very close.
I had a great day when we finally made it. I saw all kinds of interesting kids, and I briefly saw my old friend Brady Bradford, who is the regional epidemiologist for the area. How cool is that. On the way home, we did fly in the Governor's Jet, and I took a whiff of Dramamine. It was an entirely different experience.

Merry Christmas from Minnesota

We had a wonderful Christmas with Ryan's family. The only blemish on the day was the absence of Greg and Lauren. We "tele-Christmased" with them via iChat; our thoughts and prayers and with them and the twins (please...don't come yet!)

I spent the two days following Christmas engrossed in The Thirteenth Tale, by Diane Setterfield. I utterly enjoyed it. It would be a great book club read.

We head back to the real world tomorrow, and we will celebrate with the Harmans. I can't wait to see Jamie AND Kimmy!

It's begining to look a lot like...

Because we will be spending Christmas in Minnesota this year, I nearly didn't decorate. But one thing led to another, and before I knew it I had everything up. And I'm glad I did. It makes it easier to get into the spirit of the season.

Hola!

We had a fantastic time in Mexico. Couldn't have asked for more--except a few more days of vacation! Here are a few pictures.

4 more hours...

...and I'm done with nights! Only 7 more call nights EVER as a resident. Reason to celebrate.

PANDORA

The two things that have kept me up at 4:00 am are this fun little blog and Pandora. Pandora is a website that allows you to listen to streaming music. What differentiates Pandora from other sites is that it lets you choose the artists you like, and then it plays music based on your picks. Pretty neat.

A few days in the Windy City

Ryan and I recently visited Greg (his brother) and Lauren in Chicago. Greg's finishing Law School at the University of Chicago this year, so we took the opportunity to get a locals tour. This picture is from what is affectionately known as "The Bean." Here we are after a long day of walking up and down Chicago's Magnificent Mile. You can see more pictures at

Ready to go

Ryan and I leave for Mexico in less than 2 weeks. I haven't been this excited for a vacation, since Disneyland when I was 8 (thank you Grandma!) This is the hotel we're staying in near Merida. A dash of sun, a sprinkle of sand and a generous helping of ruins. Should be fun.
